Horror books & where horror books are going
Horror books and where horror books are going
Things have been slowing down a bit lately for the horror books industry. Is it because a lack of talent in the industry? No. Is it because a lack of creativity from the publishers? No. Simply, it’s the economy stupid. The economy is hitting everyone, as unemployment rates rise sales are going down, it’s an irrefutable connection that is causing much suffering for many, including horror books publishers. Many great publishing companies, such as Dark Regions Press or Cemetery Dance, have seen their sales drop at a scary rate because of the economy despite the steady release of fine horror books, fantasy books and science fiction books.
Does this mean it’s all doom and gloom from this point forward? No, but it does mean we are facing difficult times. Things probably won’t start looking up for a while, at least not until the economy starts shaping up. Not to dive too far into politics, but it’s very possible that universal healthcare would give the economy a significant boost. With much of the middle class no longer having to worry as much about healthcare costs, they’ll have more money to spend on things like horror books. Clearly healthcare isn’t the cure to all ills (no pun intended) but there’s a good chance it will help significantly.
Some fear that the U.S. economy is doomed for failure, that we should be called a modern day Rome. I say those statements are premature. Let us not forget the hurdles that the United States has defeated in the past. The Great Depression comes speeding to mind. Sure, things on the international stage are much different than they were at that time. But is it too presumptuous to say that America still has a shot? Is it too presumptuous to claim that the United States won’t be a Chinese controlled nation in fifty years? I don’t think so. I think this country stands a fighting chance, we just need to do some major overhauls to our economic system and start rethinking a lot of old and outdated policies. Once this happens I think we will see a new and even more powerful United States, one that has a strong economic future on the international stage. If that were to happen my friends, rest assured, the sales for horror books would sky rocket and all of us would benefit as a result.
So where do we go from here? Well, horror books publishers need to soldier on. keep to release interesting and creative works. Once things finally come onto the mend and the days of economic sorrow are for the most part behind us we can look for to a much more rewarding publishing environment. Until the day comes, keep your shoes on, it’s going to be a long march.
