Can San Diego Chargers Fans Dare to Hope?

Published by admin at 3:21 pm under Uncategorized

Well… yeah. They can. They have. For years. Despite the fact that their team has always fallen short of expectations, going on impressive, pre-playoffs winning streaks only to lose once the pressure of the actual playoffs is on. But who knows. Maybe this year will be different. That is, if the Chargers can keep their collective head in the game and stay focused on improving their strengths.

Right now, the Chargers hold the number one spot in the AFC West Division after soundly pummeling the Denver Broncos last Sunday 32-3. It was San Diego’s fifth win in a row after a rather shaky season start that included 3 losses, one of them against Denver, who last month was actually leading San Diego in standings by 3 ½ games. So what is San Diego doing right and what do they need to keep doing?

The Denver Game

Last Sunday’s game saw a whole different Chargers team than the team that faced off and lost against Denver in week 6. This time around, San Diego players ignored the taunts by the Broncos huddle and stuck to doing what they do best: playing a pragmatic running game and great defense.

The Chargers captured 203 yards on the ground over the course of 43 rough-and-tumble attempts. Quarterback Philip Rivers completed 17 out of 22 passes, a completion rate of 77%, for a total of 145 yards. If you saw the San Diego Chargers pictures you know the defense was solid. Like it’s supposed to be. It gave Denver no quarter and caused three turnovers. Basically, San Diego performed just like its fans expected it to all along. Now let’s see how long they can keep it up.

The Next Six-Weeks

San Diego’s only real challenges should come in weeks 14 and 15, when they’ll be playing against Dallas and Cincinnati respectively. So far, San Diego has never lost a game in December under the coaching of Nerv Turner, something that might give fans hope. Also, the veteran leadership of the Chargers seems to know that a winning streak guarantees nothing. “It’s not Week 17 of the season so we can’t relax,” said Rivers. “We have to keep going strong because we can still keep getting better.”
