Portland may a bit short on the number of dance clubs by big-city standards, but the ones it does have are lively and present everything from New York to the Greek Islands to 70s America.

Modern martini-type bars are commonplace here. The most well liked part of town is the Pearl Distrrict expediently located about a block from one another.

The town’s most recent hot/hip hangout is BlueHour located roughly at 13th and Burnside in the Pearl District’s Weidon & Kennedy building, it’s where Portland’s attractive people go to spend their cash. The classy restaurant/bar is not cheap – dinner and drinks can easily set one back a C note – but neither is the crowd.

Along the same lines is Oba ( 12th and Hoyt ). Best for Fri. discount hour, it continues well into the evening. Oba is classy with a twist of casual. Dimly lit with coloured lights, it has a upper 20s-30s professional crowd who are just dyin’ to meet ya. A bonus is that the bartenders remember each patron’s fave drink.

Evening mixing runs high at unclean, and not just behind the bar.

The bar hopping starts round nine, when the bunch departs Oba and turns the corner to 3rd and couch. Dirty features good music and a super-friendly crowd. Like Candy, Dirty is an upscale people-meeting bar.

A fourth area option is Touche ( 15h and Gleason ). Stylish and casual, the upstairs bar is good in the week or weekends for playing pool or simply hanging out.

For high-end drinking, Huber’s ( third and sheer ). Is unparalleled. A favorite haunt of Blazers’ players, it serves a flaming Spanish coffee poured right at your table ; please don’t spill! These keep the well-dressed crowd happy well into the night. Huber’s is the oldest, most classy bar in Portland. The owner works the door and the waiters are in tuxedos. If you want to affect someone, go to Huber’s. ( Psst : for those having dinner, the roasted turkey is legendary. )

When it’s time to dance, Portland offers a fascinating mixture of clubs.

Cobolt, across Burnside on 3rd Street, is an alternative dance club that is’s always packed. Earlier, it is a cool place to hang because it’s got a bunch of board games. The 1201 in the Pearl District is a tiny but hip dance club.

The Crystal dancehall ( 13th and Broadway ) is a causal dance club featuring some of Portland’s hottest bands. Bar 71, across from Kells pub,has an outside dance floor that is preferred for strippers on their off nights. Since everyone in Portland know this, Bar 71 draws a good deal of men but it has no lack of ladies, either.

Portland’s leading edge club is the Lotus cafeteria ( below photograph ). It is simple to like a place where one can get a slice of pie before paying the doorman the modest $5 cover charge. Within, the Lotus cafe is similar to a hip London club without all of the fanfare. The gang is a mix of everything – casually-dressed executives, wildly-dressed punkers, you want it. Lotus is wild, funny, off-beat and laid-back, all at the same time.

The scene changes according to one’s location in the club. The long bar, bracketed by a tables and a diner-style counter, is great for having a drink and chatting with mates. Enter the Card Room , however , and it transforms into a dance club that’s’s part Euro and part NY with a touch of Vegas. A laser-light show creates an active dance scene, a glitter-covered girl grooves on top of the bar and masculine and feminine dancers in all white move wildly in a second-story cage lit by black lights ( right ).

Berbat’s Pan – not to be confused with Berbat’s bar and restaurant spotted in our’pubs’ section – has good food, great drinks, is overwhelming sometimes and sucks other times. The gang is modern young.

On Thursdays, almost all of Portland’s clubbers divert themselves to Fernando’s Hideaway ( concealed away on initial Street at the Hawthorne Bridge ). It’s a two-level, upscale club with a large, open bar on the first floor and a high-energy dance floor up the steps. By ten p.m, there appear to more people waiting in a queue than there are within. To avoid this, arrive by 9:30.

Why Do We Still Love Marilyn Monroe?

1962 Marilyn Monroe is found dead.  Over 40 years have passed and yet we see her likeness everywhere.  She remains iconic.  We hear that word a lot lately in the news, used rather too often, referring to movie stars.  In the Encarta Dictionary the #4 definition of ICON is: recognizable symbol: a picture or symbol that is universally recognized to be representative of something.  If ever there was a definition that fits Marilyn Monroe, that’s it.  To this day, she is universally recognized.

Every year it seems that new, unpublished photo’s of Marilyn appear.  Certainly the camera loved her as even at her worst in some photo’s, it’s hard to take your eyes off her image.

Whether one thinks of her as tragic, or heroic, or simply one of the most beautiful women of the world for her time, and indeed, for any other time; she lives on in the hearts of not just her contemporaries, but to two new generations as well.

In our time today, when excesses are just the norm, and we seem to have no reaction at all to an inordinate amount of drug use and violence from movie stars.  And so, it now seems somewhat "common" that she died of an overdose.  After all, a lot of so-called "big stars" have done that since then.  But how big is big?  How long will the rest of them remain icons?  It’s highly doubtful that 40 years from now you will see the amount of photo’s and books, press reports and general media coverage for Kurt Cobain that would equal Marilyn Monroe’s!  So the question is: what is it about her that draws us?

Perhaps it’s all of it.  The beauty, that transcends paper or film and seems to look right at us; the tragedy of her life where she could not seem to find happiness with any man, even though so lovely; or the heroic nature of her ability to persevere through many things that would have stopped anyone else in their tracks, long before.

Those of us that were around when she was alive and could follow her life somewhat, still lament that it did not work with Joe DiMaggio.  After all, it was perfectly clear that he loved her – the real person, not the icon.  What drives anyone, let alone Marilyn and Joe, to let go of such a deep love?  Perhaps it is just that.  Too deep a love breeds too much upset at anything that does not fit the picture of how it "should be".  And so, people come apart because of the level of the passion of their love; unable to think past the now and unable to let the one they love make mistakes.

Perhaps we can all envision Joe and Marilyn, finally happy in some wonderful hereafter, living a quiet life, talking, walking, and just enjoying each other.  No fame, no pressure, just an abiding comfort and peaceful love.

There is no question that Marilyn is in fact a legend.  Within her own lifetime she created a myth about herself.  A mystery.  And there is nothing that the people like to encounter more, than a mystery!  Endlessly fascinating; endlessly watchable; and enduringly unknown in a real-life sense.  Marilyn was all of that and more.

The other part of Marilyn that continues her popularity is that we all can share in the heights of her fame and brilliance; and the lows of her rejections and ultimate tragedy.  It makes her into a real person.  Caught up in, first – the ultimate dream.  Stardom, riches, fame, and adoration.  And second – caught up in the pain of life, the losses and difficulties that everyone faces.  She didn’t hide, although she could have used more privacy.  She was ‘everywoman’.  If she could make it, then we all can make it.  To get to the top of her profession; to become a great actress, and a good singer/entertainer; and then to overcome so many losses to rise again and again, she inspires us.

And in the end, inspiration is the grandest of all gifts.  However, it comes to you, it is inspiration that drives us; enables our creativity; endows us with more than we seem to have sometimes; and overall, makes us happy and productive in a personally satisfying way.  Thanks Marilyn Monroe.  You were one of a kind; we still love you, and you deserve that affection.  Be at peace.  www.marilynforsale.com
